Here are a few questions you may have. If you have others, please email Dakotas@scbwi.org.
I've never attended an SCBWI event before. Is this for me?
Definitely! All you need to attend is a manuscript in progress and a desire to learn. You'll have a chance to get some great advice from a top editor and to meet other Dakota writers who will help and encourage you on your writing journey.
Can I submit to Viking after the conference?
Yes. Everyone who attends will be able to submit one manuscript to Ms. Levin at Viking. However, you must wait until four months after the workshop, which gives you time to really polish your masterpiece! You'll learn the details at the workshop.
Just wondering: Why Mobridge?
Mobridge is in almost the exact center of our region. You're encouraged to car pool if several are coming from your area. The South Dakota Humanities Council is giving us a grant to help defray costs since Mobridge is in an underserved area. We'll be meeting on the Standing Rock Reservation. The casino is in a beautiful location, and it is managed by some terrific Lakota people.
What's the Refund Policy?
If you must cancel, you will receive a full refund (minus a $25 processing fee) until June 15. From June 15 to August 15: you will get a 50% refund. There will be no refunds after that date.
I'm a vegetarian. What are the food options?
Meals are served buffet style, so there are several options at each meal for those who are on vegetarian or gluten-free diets. We cannot provide vegan options. A restaurant and a convenience store are also available on site. (Note: these are not included in meal plan.)
Is smoke a problem?
The hotel and conference rooms are smoke-free. Even the casino has a smoke-free option. Be sure to request a non-smoking room. I stayed at the lodge and did not notice any problem with a smoke odor. Email me Dakotas@scbwi.org if you are concerned about this.
How do I find a roommate or a carpool?
You have two options: send a note to the Dakotas SCBWI listserv or contact Dakotas@gmail.com. We will be keeping a list of those needing roommates and rides.
